William James' philosophy of ethics and morality
Pragmatism William James Books
Pragmatism is a short series of lectures given by William James that encapsulates the philosophy of the same name. Philosophy is enormously important but also horribly communicated by its main proponents, which is a major reason why it has the reputation of being esoteric and unrelated to reality. When reading philosophy, it is important to look at the core ideas. James believes reality is fluid, there is no firm reality and therefore no definite truth. His definition of truth is that which works in process. The problem is what is it that "works" in process? Based on what standard? And if truth is based on other ideas, the real definition of truth (that which is based on reality) gets thrown out the window. He provides a decent overview of the competing schools of rationalism and empricism and offers his view as something that accommodates both. The biggest problem is he assumes what works is indisputable and he doesn't answer the problem that arises if something is bad and you wait to see its effects it may be too late to correct, instead of using principles to determine it is bad in the first place.
Overall, this philosophy is so disastrous because it replaces good ideas with his ideas by redefinitions. It eviscerates the idea of using principles, which is of course the way man survives. It negates principle, on principle. By removing man's way of survival, this philosophy must in the end lead to destruction.
Two stars instead of one because philosophy always deserves more than a single star.

Pragmatism William James Books Reviews

A1
Almost anything written by James is worth reading. The idea here is not "apply" anything in a very modern fashion. The journey is the reward. You just want to be beside him while he is thinking.
Truly a brilliant work of philosophy that is too often ignored in modern American philosophy. If the truth is what works, then this book is full of truths.
This was one of the best reads in the last year. I'd recommend it to anyone. there are some parts that are talking about what was happening at the time of it's writing (1920s) that don't really mean anything today, but great none the less. Every political read should have to read this!
